About the Heritage Site

  • Country: Poland
  • Location: Located in Malbork, on the southeastern bank of the river Nogat, in Malbork, 60 km to the south-east from Gdansk
  • Type of location: Malbork is the largest Gothic castle complex, and at the same time the largest brick construction in the world, the true masterpiece of defensive and residential architecture of the late Middle Ages. The unique complex of three united castles was terribly damaged in 1945. Raised from ashes it is still an object of advanced conservation works. In 1997 the magnificent treasure of the European architecture was inscribed into the UNESCO List of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
  • Experience offered: The fortress on the River Nogat was built in several stages between the late 13th and early 15th centuries. The founders were the Teutonic Knights – a German order of knighthood that came to the Baltic Prussia from Palestine, where the knights were involved in the Crusades. For more than 170 years Malbork served as a fortified monastery and capital of the monastic state in Prussia. From 1457 to 1772 the castle on the River Nogat was a temporary residence for the kings of Poland as well as a seat for the district governor and his garrison.
It is a particularly fine example of a medieval brick castle, that was meticulously restored in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Since 1961 the castle has been run by Malbork Castle Museum. Today it offers a variety of exhibitions and special events, including “Light and Sound Show” and “The Siege of Malbork” – a re-enactment of the battle of 1410, that is staged every July and draws participants from Poland and other countries.
