The Abbey Church, which continues in use as Doberan Minster (Doberaner Münster), is one of the most important Brick Gothic buildings in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Until the Reformation, during which it was secularised in 1552, the abbey possessed great estates, and was the burial place of the Princess of Mecklenburg. The premises were badly damaged in 1637 during the Thirty Years' War, when the minster was used as a storage depot, and some buildings were destroyed. During the French occupation of Mecklenburg under Napoleon from 1806 to 1813 more damage was sustained, and the church was again used as an ammunition dump. Between 1883 and 1896 the church was "restored" in an inappropriate 19th century Gothic Revival style, which was undone in a further restoration in the 1960s and 1970s.

About the Heritage Site

  • Country: Germany
  • Location: City of Bad Doberan, close to Rostock, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Germany
  • Type of location: Bad Doberan Abbey Church
  • Experience offered:
Bad Doberan Abbey is a church originally belonging to a Cistercian monastery regarded by historians as the most important monastery in the Mecklenburg region during the Middle Ages. In fact, historians regard the abbey’s interior as the most important Cistercian church in Europe. On the top of the church itself, guests can visit monastery's farm building (Wirtschaftsgebäude), an original hospice for travellers (Wolfscheune), the facility's granary (Kornhaus) and charnel house (Beinhaus). The complex is encompassed by a 1.4 kilometres long round wall that's remained almost fully intact.
Several guided tours take place daily in the abbey. A wide concert program is offered in the church from June until September (every Friday at 19h30). Further the city offers e.g. several classical buildings and a narrow-gauge railway steam train “Molli” which connects the city with Heiligendamm, part of the city on the Baltic Sea coast.
